Almost every Indian business starting an online store reaches the same fork: Shopify or WooCommerce? Ask online and you get strong opinions from both sides, usually from people who sell one of them. The honest answer is that both are good platforms, and the right choice depends on your products, your team, your budget over the next few years and how much control you need.

This comparison is written for Indian businesses specifically: UPI and COD, GST invoices, Razorpay and Shiprocket, rupee costs, and the kind of teams most Indian SMEs and D2C brands actually have.

The Short Answer

  • Choose Shopify if you want to launch quickly, your team is not technical, you sell standard physical products to consumers, and you prefer a predictable monthly bill over managing servers.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you want lower running costs, full control over the store and its data, flexible B2B or custom pricing, a content-heavy site, or you already run WordPress.

If neither fits because you need complex custom workflows or very high performance, look at a custom build. We covered that in Shopify vs a custom Next.js store.

How They Differ at the Core

ShopifyWooCommerce
What it isHosted ecommerce platform (software as a service)Free ecommerce plugin for WordPress
HostingIncluded and managed by ShopifyYou choose and pay for hosting
Security and updatesHandled by ShopifyYour responsibility, or your developer's
Monthly platform feeYesNo

Ease for non-technical teamsVery easyEasy once set up, but needs upkeep

Indian Requirements, Side by Side

RequirementShopifyWooCommerce
UPI, cards, net banking via Razorpay, Cashfree, PayUYes, through third-party gatewaysYes, through free official plugins
Cash on deliveryYes, with apps for COD rules and verificationYes, with flexible rules through plugins or code

Shopify Payments is not available to Indian businesses, so Shopify stores in India use a third-party gateway. That is why the Shopify transaction fee on lower plans matters for Indian merchants and is worth including in your cost comparison.

Cost: Setup and Five Years of Running

Launch cost is similar for both. The difference is in what you pay every month after that.

Typical setup cost

At INDOTREX, both Shopify and WooCommerce stores start from ₹25,000 for a theme-based setup with payments, shipping and core pages. Custom designs and complex features are quoted after scoping.

Running costs compared

Cost itemShopifyWooCommerce
Platform planMonthly fee plus GSTNone
HostingIncluded₹6,000 – ₹30,000 a year for good hosting
ThemeFree or one-time premium licenceFree or one-time/yearly premium licence
Apps or pluginsOften ₹500 – ₹3,000 a month eachOften free, or a yearly licence
Platform transaction feeOn lower plans with third-party gatewaysNone
Payment gateway feesYesYes (same gateways)
MaintenanceLightRegular updates, backups and security

An illustrative five-year comparison

These figures are assumptions to show the method, not quotes. Assume a store doing ₹3 lakh of sales a month, a Shopify plan of about ₹2,000 a month, a 2% Shopify transaction fee for using a third-party gateway on the basic plan, and four paid apps averaging ₹800 a month each.

Five-year costShopifyWooCommerce
Plan₹1,20,000₹0
Shopify transaction fee₹3,60,000₹0
Apps or plugins₹1,92,000₹40,000
HostingIncluded₹75,000
Maintenance₹30,000₹1,50,000
Approximate total₹7,02,000₹2,65,000

Check Shopify's current plans and transaction fees before you use these numbers, because they change and higher plans reduce the transaction fee. Payment gateway charges apply on both platforms, so they are left out.

The point is not that WooCommerce is always cheaper. With low sales, few apps and no in-house tech help, Shopify's predictability is worth paying for. As sales grow, the platform's percentage-based costs start to matter, and that is when the comparison shifts.

Ease of Use and Your Team

Shopify wins on day-to-day simplicity. Adding products, processing orders and running discounts is straightforward, and nothing breaks because a plugin updated overnight.

WooCommerce is also easy to use once set up, but someone needs to own updates, backups and security. If nobody does, problems build quietly. We see many hacked WooCommerce stores that simply had not been updated in a year. Our WordPress malware removal guide explains how that happens. If you choose WooCommerce, budget for a maintenance plan.

Speed and SEO

Both can be fast, and both can be slow.

  • Shopify has fast, reliable hosting, but each installed app can add scripts that slow pages down. URL structure is fixed, with /products/ and /collections/ in the address.
  • WooCommerce speed depends heavily on hosting, theme and plugin choices. Done well, it is fast. Done on cheap shared hosting with thirty plugins, it is not. URLs and SEO settings are fully flexible.

For content-heavy brands that rely on blogs, guides and SEO, WordPress gives more flexibility. For product-led brands that drive traffic mainly through ads and Instagram, the difference matters less.

Scaling and Traffic Spikes

Shopify handles sale-day traffic spikes without you thinking about servers. WooCommerce can handle large stores too, but needs proper hosting, caching and sometimes a developer before big sales. If you plan to run heavy Diwali or end-of-season campaigns, plan WooCommerce hosting for peak traffic, not average days.

Switching Later

You are not locked in forever. Products, customers and order history can be migrated in either direction. The critical part is mapping old URLs to new ones with 301 redirects so you keep your search rankings. We follow the same discipline as in a website redesign.

Why Talk to INDOTREX

INDOTREX builds Shopify, WooCommerce and custom ecommerce stores for Indian businesses from our New Delhi base, so we have no reason to push one platform. Setup starts from ₹25,000 on either platform.

Not sure which to pick? Tell us what you sell, your expected monthly orders and who will run the store, and we will reply with a recommendation and quote within two business days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WooCommerce or Shopify better in India?

Neither is better for everyone. Shopify suits teams that want a quick, low-maintenance launch. WooCommerce suits businesses that want lower running costs, full control and flexible B2B or content features.

Which is cheaper in India, Shopify or WooCommerce?

Setup costs are similar. Over several years, WooCommerce usually costs less to run because there is no platform fee or Shopify transaction fee, but it needs regular maintenance.

Does Shopify charge a transaction fee in India?

Shopify Payments is not available in India, so stores use third-party gateways. On lower Shopify plans, this means Shopify charges its own transaction fee in addition to the gateway's fee.

Can I use Razorpay with both Shopify and WooCommerce?

Yes. Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU all integrate with both platforms, supporting UPI, cards, net banking and wallets.

Which is better for SEO?

Both can rank well. WooCommerce offers more control over URLs and content because it runs on WordPress. Shopify has a fixed URL structure but handles technical basics well.

Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify later, or the other way?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated, and 301 redirects protect your rankings during the move.
